2023 Volvo FMX Electric – Volvo FMX Electric, one of three new electric truck models that Volvo Trucks will be releasing next year, is the Volvo FMX Electric. It joins five other models in Europe and one in North America. A recent report states that Volvo Trucks, ABB, and Vattenfall partnered with Wist Last & Buss last winter for a pilot test of the Volvo FMX Electric high above the polar circle. These companies wanted to validate their current technology and determine the limits of what was possible.

In February 2021, a pre-production Volvo FMX Electric tipper (a 32t Gross Weight version) was used to transport ore concentrate. Finely ground iron ore from Kaunisvaara’s iron ore mine to the Iron Ore Railway Line transshipment station. The round trip took 280km (174 miles), but the tipper carried 14 tonnes of ore concentrate for 140 km (87miles). According to the press release, the Volvo FMX Electric was equipped with a 264-kWh battery (there will also be 180-540kWh options in the final product), and was capable of performing the task during winter. The main challenge was still fast charging at the endpoints (after each 140km run).

New Design
The new Volvo FMX Electric and Volvo FM Electric prototypes were tested for over a year in construction. There were already versions that came with a mixer or with a hook lift.

The smaller Volvo FE Electric, which can also be used as a tipper truck, is already available. Tom Wilhelmsen AS was the first company to install three fully-electric tipper trucks in Norway for construction operations.
