2023 Volvo VNR Electric Truck – Volvo Trucks has announced the next-generation Volvo VNR Electric, its first all-electric Class 8 semi-truck in North America. It was launched in December 2020. For a significantly longer range, the new Volvo VNR Electric has a larger battery and a larger pack option (for certain configurations). The fast charging is faster.

The battery system is the most significant improvement. The 264 kWh (four batteries) battery has been replaced by a new 375kWh version (42% more). This alone was the biggest contributor to the increase in the range of the 4×2 Straight truck configuration, which went from 150 to 230 miles (80 or 53%).

As the vehicle’s range increases, so do its energy capacity. We believe that this makes the vehicle more efficient. The battery system now has a 6-battery version, with a total capacity of 565 kWh. This option is only available for certain vehicle configurations (see details at the bottom). It can extend the range by up to 275 miles (442km).
250 kW Fast Charging
Volvo VNR Electric will also be able fast charge at 250 kW with the new batteries. Depending on which version you have, charging to 80% should take less than 60 minutes (375 or 90 minutes) depending on how fast your computer is. When the power limit was 150kW, charging to that level took 70 minutes (264-kWh battery).

The Volvo VNR Electric now comes in two additional configurations, besides the EV-related upgrades: a 6×4 straight truck or a 6×4 tractor. The Volvo VNR Electric electric is available now for purchase. Series production at the New River Valley plant in Dublin, Virginia, will start in Q2 2022.
