Exterior

Although the Tonale is very similar to its namesake concept, it has been modified for production. The concept’s LED matrix full headlights, and taillights, are thicker than the actual. The rear door handles are the same as the original concept, but they are more traditional. The production model also has side mirrors. The iconic styling cues of the Tonale make it easy to identify as an Alfa Romeo.

Alfa Romeo’s first plug-in model is based on an evolution of FCA’s Small Wide (SUSW) platform, which was also used by Jeep Renegade and Compass. Alfa Romeo pointed out that the suspension (fully autonomous MacPherson setup with Frequency Selective Dampinghock absorbers and Frequency Selective Dampinghock spring absorbers), steering (13.6:1) and electronic architecture were all brand new.  It measures 178.3 in (4.53 m), 72.4 in (1.84 m), and 63.0 inches (1.6 meters) high, which is comparable to a BMW X1.

Interior

Tonale’s interior is extremely focused on the driver. Highlights include a 12.3-inch “telescopic” instrument panel, small steering wheels with sporty shapes, aluminum shift paddles, and a 10.25 inch main touch screen. On the center console is the new DNA mode selector. The driver can choose between Advanced Efficiency (all electric), Natural (maximum efficiency), and Dual Power/Dynamic.

Engine

All-electric mode is possible because the Tonale was Alfa Romeo’s first vehicle to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain and standard Q4 AWD. It has a 1.3-liter MultiAir turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and a 90kW (121 HP) electric motor at its rear. This Alfa Romeo exclusive is unique. The total power of the system is 272 HP. But the best thing about the system is the 30 mile (48 km) all-electric range. Tonale PHEV’s lithium-ion battery pack is found low in the vehicle. This allows for a 52/48 weight distribution and “unparalleled” traction. It also enhances driving enjoyment. If you use a Level 2 charger with 240-volts, the full charge will take approximately 2.5 hours.

Good news! The Tonale plug-in hybrid will be made available to the US market. An ICE variant will be available, a 256-hp turbo-4 turbo-four. It is attached to a standard 9-speed auto and a mechanical Q4-AWD system. Europe will also get two-hybrid 1.5-liter gasoline engines with 128 horsepower or 158 horsepower and a 48-volt electric motor that is rated as 15kW (20 HP), 55 Nm (40lbft) in electrical torque.

Technology Systems

The Tonale introduces NFT (non-fungible token technology) to Alfa Romeo. Every vehicle will be connected to a digital NFT certification, which is a first in Alfa Romeo’s history and for the entire industry. The NFT will track vehicle data, and create a certificate that can serve as proof of vehicle maintenance history and mileage. The Tonale includes the Uconnect 5, which is the latest version of in-car tech and offers wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over-the-air capabilities via Alfa Connect.

Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) are available on the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale. It provides semi-autonomous level 2 driving with traffic jam assistance. It works with systems such as Traffic Sign Recognition and Adaptive Cruise Control. Intelligent Speed Assist can also be used.
