What’s New for 2022?
Toyota offers the Tundra a needed, total update after the previous generation went largely unchanged since its release in 2007. Although it was refreshed to the 2014 model year, it struggled to steal sales from domestic half-ton rivals like that of Ford F-150, the Ram 1500 and the Chevy Silverado 1500 along with the GMC Sierra 1500. The new Tundra will not beat any of these competitors, but its myriad improvements are expected to make it more competitive and appealing once it is available for sale this winter.
The Tundra was available only with an naturally-aspirated V-8 engine. In the new model year it’s the Tundra gets a V-6, and it’s much more powerful than its predecessor engine despite having two less engine cylinders. A 10-speed auto transmission replaces the old six-speed for all models.
A normal 3.5-litre twin-turbo V-6 produces 389 hp and 479 pounds of torque (compare with the 2021 Tundra’s 381 horsepower, 401 lb-ft V-8). Buyers who want more power can match this V-6 engine by a motor that is electric. This hybrid option is available output boosts up to 437 horsepower and 583 pounds of torque. These hybrids offer top tech.
The Tundra ditches the previous models’ choice of normally produced V6 or V8 for the choice the twin turbo 3.5L V6s. One is powered electrically and the other by an electronic hybrid system. The base V6 produces 389 horsepower while the other produces 479 pound-feet of torque. Both are an improvement over the 5.7L V8 that powered the 2021 Tundra. It was able to produce 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet. A hybrid’s electric motor makes the 2022 Tundra’s horsepower in the range of 437 horsepower or 583 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission is the standard. It replaces the six-speed automatic that’s in the 21 model.
Truck manufacturers like to beat their chests with the most payload and towing numbers, even in this half-ton category. That’s the reason Toyota was eager to let us know that its new Tundra can carry 12,000 pounds of towing when it is equipped with the hybrid V6 engine and the correct towing options. It’s nearly 20% more than the previous Tundra which is a great thing, in any case. Information on the smaller engine aren’t available yet.
Much like payload, a half ton truck’s engine and body design affect its towing rating. With this in mind, aim for the maximum weight of 12,700 pounds; in Ford as well as 11,560 pounds in Ram.
