2022 Toyota Tundra V6 Twin Turbo – The debut of a brand-new half-ton pickup causes excitement in our household, particularly since the truck is replacing one that’s been in production with only minor adjustments for the better fifteen years. If the same vehicle is equipped with new engines, our curiosity will kick into the high gears.

What’s New for 2022?
Toyota offers the Tundra a much-needed, total overhaul after the previous generation had remained mostly unchanged since its debut in 2007. Even though it was refreshed in 2014 for the model year the Tundra struggled to take the market share from half-ton domestic rivals such as such as the Ford F-150, the Ram 1500 and the Chevy Silverado 1500, along with the GMC Sierra 1500. The updated Tundra can’t yet beat any of these competitors, but its myriad improvements are expected to make it more competitive and appealing once it arrives at dealerships in the winter.
Previously, the Tundra was available only with the naturally aspirated V-8 engine. With the arrival of the new model year the Tundra comes with a V-6 and it’s much more powerful than the old engine with two fewer cylinders. The 10-speed automatic transmission replaces the old six-speed on all models.
A regular 3.5-litre twin-turbo V-6 produces 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque (compare that to the 2021 Tundra’s 381-hpand 401 pounds of torque V-8). Customers who require more power can match their V-6 engine with an electric engine. In this hybrid configuration, output jumps up to 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. These hybrid systems feature serious tech.
The Tundra eliminates the earlier models’ preference for a naturally driven V6s or V8s in favour with two twin turbine 3.5L V6s, one electrically augmented by a hybrid system. The base V6 generates 389 horsepower along with 479 pound-feet of torque. Both are an improvement against the 5.7L V8 that powered the 2021 Tundra. It put out 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet in torque. Adding a hybrid’s electric motor raises the 2022 Tundra’s power in the range of 437 horsepower or 583 pounds-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission comes as normal. It replaces the six-speed manual used in the ’21 model.
Truck makers love to beat their chests with the best towing and payloads, even in this half-ton category. This is the reason Toyota was eager to reveal that its new Tundra can haul 12,000 pounds in the new hybrid V6 and the proper towing systems. This is 20 percent more than the original Tundra in fact. Estimates for those with a smaller engine aren’t available yet.
As with payloads, a half-ton truck’s engine and body configuration play a big part in its towing rating. We’ll pick the biggest hybrid powertrain four-door at Ford and Ram to test against Toyota’s IForce MAX. In this regard, you should look for a maximum of 12,700 pounds for Ford or 11,560 pounds at Ram.
