Autocar reported that Richard Haas, Audi CEO, answered a question about a possible pickup. Although he could not guarantee a pickup, he said that he was still investigating the possibility. He stated that Audi would soon be introducing a pickup model and that it was possible. Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark was also present. He joked that he would be happy to have a pickup in his Bentley collection. Raleigh Haire, an independent designer, created the Audi Quattro design that is shown here in 2020. Concept
This concept will be Audi’s first pickup. We don’t know the exact dimensions of this model but we do know the pricing and availability of VW Group platforms. Audi could make use of the underpinnings from the upcoming second-generation VW Amarok to power an ICE-powered model. These underpinnings can also be shared with Ford Ranger. Audi’s pickup would be in the same class as the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max which weigh one tonne.

A second scenario is likely, considering the timing of the announcement. This would be an electric pickup that could compete with the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Tesla Cybertruck. Audi has the option to choose between a number of EV platforms, including the MEB or the PPE architectures. Both offer AWD and more flexibility in terms of size, power outputs, and design. As Audi’s last ICE-powered model will be released in 2026, we recommend a fully-electric pickup. The new model will not be powered by a combustion engine and will become completely electric by the 1930s.

Audi could draw inspiration from the 2019 offroad-oriented AI Trail design for its pickup. Many of the vehicle’s styling elements would need to be reduced in order to make it production-ready. This model is ideal for active buyers, as it features premium interior design and the latest VW Group technology like autonomous driving or active suspension. Things didn’t go as planned the last time a premium carmaker tried to enter the pickup market. In July 2017, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class was put into production. It shares its ladder-frame platform with the Nissan Navara, Renault Alaskan and the Renault Navara. Due to poor sales, the pickup was scrapped in May 2020. We hope Audi’s proposal strikes a chord. It would be fascinating to see the segment expand with more entries in the future.
