The electric car revolution is just beginning. Mercedes-Benz prepared for it by introducing the EQE, an EV companion to the E-Class, instead of another powertrain model. However, the phrase “emission-free” is increasingly used in discussions about future transportation. Mercedes-Benz must take this into consideration when deciding where the E-Class (and other sedans) will go.
The sixth generation of E-Class is not going to be a complete redesign of the current model, despite the Euro 7 emission regulations that are expected to enter into effect around 2025. This means it will still feature internal combustion engines. Some of these engines could trigger EU fines for their emissions after 2025. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, internally codenamed W214 has just recently been tested on public roads in prototype form. Its official unveiling is expected to take place sometime next year. Pre-production prototypes are heavily camouflaged so there’s not much to discuss its design. However, judging from the proportions and visible details it will look similar to the C-Class W206 or the S-Class W223. This means that there are fewer creases along the sides, pop-up handles on the doors, slimmer headlights, and triangular-shaped, larger taillights.

Its proportions, however, seem to be reminiscent of older E-Class models. The overall appearance is more brash than sleepy, and the engine grille appears to take up more space than the current model. Lower trims should share the same interior design as the S-Class and C-Class models, with the large touchscreen at the center of the console that provides haptic feedback. The Hyperscreen from EQS, which is available in higher trims and as an option. The car will use a modified version of the MRA platform (Modular Rear-wheel-drive Architecture), which is also used to support its smaller and larger sedan brothers.
Engine
The C-Class W206 will no longer use engines with more than four cylinders. However, the E-Class W214 will not accept an engine larger than a 3.0-liter Inline-six. Mercedes-AMG E 63 will still love the V8, but it will be accompanied by at minimum two electric motors. This plug-in hybrid configuration reduces emissions.

However, the entire powertrain line-up will be electrified, primarily via a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Hybrid and plug-in hybrids with greater EV range will also be available. Diesel engines aren’t dead, either. The recent modular inline-4 and inline-6 engines were designed with future emission regulations at heart. They can be easily modified to meet these regulations.

A T-Modell (station wagon) will also be available for the model, although this will likely be the last such version due to how well wagon sales are doing globally. The entire sixth-generation E-Class will be the last, although the future is still unclear. The possibility exists that the E-Class and the EQE might merge after 2030. However, until that time, the W214 will remain a familiar entry in its category.
