2022 Toyota Tundra Update

2022 Toyota Tundra Update – The launch of a new half-ton pickup causes cheers around here, especially when the truck being discussed is replacing one that’s been in production with only minor changes for the better part of 15 years. When that same rig also comes with the option of new engines, our interest level really kicks into the top gear.

What’s New for 2022?

Toyota offers the Tundra the much-needed, comprehensive overhaul after the previous generation had remained mostly unchanged since its launch in 2007. While it was updated in 2014 but it had a difficult time stealing sales from the domestic half-ton competition like the Ford F-150, the Ram 1500, it’s Chevy Silverado 1500, or the GMC Sierra 1500. The new Tundra still isn’t expected to beat any of these competitors however, its numerous improvements are expected to make it more attractive and competitive when it is available for sale this winter.

Performance

Prior to that, the Tundra was only available with the naturally-aspirated V-8 engine. For the year of the new model the Tundra has a V-6 engine, and it’s more powerful than the old engine however it’s got two less cylinders. The 10-speed automatic transmission replaces the old six-speed for all models.

A basic 3.5-litre twin-turbo V-6 produces 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque (compare that to the 2021 Tundra’s 381hp, 401 lb-ft V-8). For those who are looking for more power, they can connect this V-6 engine using an electric motor. In this hybrid configuration output boosts to 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. These hybrid systems are top technology.

Engines

The Tundra eliminates the earlier models’ choices of a naturally driven V6s or V8s to make way for the use of two twin-turbo 3.5L V6s. One is electronically augmented with the hybrid system. The base engine produces 389 horsepower along with 479 pound-feet of torque. Both are improved in comparison to the 5.7L V8 engine that drove the 2021 Tundra. It put out 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet. By adding a hybrid’s electrical motor, it boosts the 2022 Tundra’s power at 437 horsepower. It also produces 583 pounds-feet of torque. The 10-speed automatic transmission is common. It replaces the six-speed manual which is included in the ’21 model.

Truck makers like to thump their chests with the most payload and towing numbers, even in this half-ton range. This is the reason Toyota was all too eager to inform us that its new Tundra can carry 12,000 pounds of towing when it is equipped in the new hybrid V6 as well as the right towing package. That sum is nearly 20% higher than the original Tundra towing capacity, which is quite impressive, indeed. Statistics for that smaller engine aren’t available at this time.

Much like payload, a half ton truck’s engine and body design influence its towing rating. That’s why we’ll choose the most powerful hybrid powertrain four door at Ford and Ram to contrast with Toyota’s own iForce MAX. With this in mind, aim for the maximum weight of 12,700 pounds for Ford at 11,560 lbs at Ram.
