2022 Toyota Tundra Forum – The announcement of a brand new half-ton pickup has been a cause of celebration around here, especially when the truck being discussed replaces one that has been on the market with just minor changes for the better portion of 15 years. What’s New for 2022?
Toyota offers the Tundra a much-needed, total design overhaul following the previous generation that went largely unchanged since its debut in 2007. Though it was refreshed for the 2014 model year the Tundra struggled to take sales from domestic half-ton rivals like that of Ford F-150, the Ram 1500 as well as its Chevy Silverado 1500 or the GMC Sierra 1500. The new Tundra isn’t likely to surpass any of the other options, but its myriad improvements are expected to make it more competitive and appealing once it hits the market this winter.
Performance
Previously, the Tundra was available only with a naturally-aspirated V-8 engine. The new model year Tundra, the Tundra has a V-6 engine, and it’s more efficient than the older engine with two fewer than the number of cylinders. The 10-speed automatic transmission replaces the older six-speed for all models.
A typical 3.5-litre twin-turbo V-6 produces 389 hp and 479 pounds of torque (compare this to the 2021 Tundra’s 381-hpand 401 lb-ft V-8). For those who are looking for more power, they can connect an V-6 engine with an electric engine. With this option of a hybrid setup output boosts up to 437 hp and 583 pounds of torque. The hybrid systems provide serious tech.
Engines
The Tundra eliminates the earlier models’ choices of a naturally aspirated V6 or V8 in favor that of twin 3.5L V6s. One is which is electrically enhanced with an electronic hybrid system. The base engine produces 389 horsepower, and 479 pounds of torque. Both are an improvement on the 5.7L V8 engine that drove the 2021 Tundra. It was able to produce 381 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. By adding a hybrid’s electrical motor, it makes the 2022 Tundra’s horsepower at 437 horsepower. It also produces 583 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission comes as normal. It replaces a six-speed automatic that was included in the ’21 model.
Truck makers are known to pound their chests by presenting the highest towing and payload figures even in the half-ton class. This is the reason Toyota has been eager to reveal that its new Tundra can haul 12,000 pounds in the new hybrid V6 engine and the correct towing options. This figure is around 20 percent more than the older Tundra, by the way. Estimates for this smaller engine aren’t available at this time.
As with payloads, a half-ton truck’s engine and body configuration influence the towing capacity. For that reason, we’ll select the largest hybrid powertrain four-door from Ford and Ram to test against Toyota’s own iForce MAX. With this in mind, aim for the maximum weight of 12,700 pounds; in Ford 11 560 pounds for Ram.
